National Council of Jewish Women, founded in 1893, is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideas into action. NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children and families.
The Kansas City chapter, currently 600 strong, was founded in 1895. Since then, NCJWKC has implemented over 60 programs-- from a 1901 program representing children in juvenile court (now the independent CASA of Jackson County and Casa of Johnson/Wyandotte Counties) to a 2000 program, Kids and Teachers=School (KATS) that currently provides yearly birthday parties for 1,500 grade school children in five Kansas City elementary schools where 90-95% of children receive free or reduced cost lunch. Among NCJWKC’s twelve currently active service programs, nine of them aid children from poor families. Besides KATS, these include Children’s Place Back Snack Program in conjunction with Harvesters, We Care for Eye Care, providing children with free eye exams and glasses, and Baskets for Babies, providing clothing and supplies for newborns, in conjunction with Operation Breakthrough; The Back to School Store that provides a full set of clothing and school supplies, and Suitcase to Start which provides kitchen, bedroom, cleaning, bathroom and personal care items for teens aging out of foster care.
