Eastern University’s school of leadership and development has selected 22 graduate students of international development to travel to Vara Blanca, Costa Rica with the Association for Development through Education (ADE). This trip will reflect an emphasis on disaster relief and mitigation with respect to geological disasters primarily earthquakes and volcanic explosions in light of the recent and on-going tragedy in Haiti. The idea of this trip is to give the students, as future development practitioners, firsthand experience to analyze and critique current relief and mitigation practices in Costa Rica. We will be hoping to offer a mutual “tri-fecta” value added experience to three distinct learning communities: ADE high school students, UCR ecology students, and Eastern University International Development students. Of course we also believe that this will help the local community by enabling ADE to continue to develop the network of academic institutions thus opening up possibilities for future generations.
The group will be leaving on April 23 and returning on April 30, but in order for the students to take up this opportunity of service and learning, your prayer and/or financial support is needed. Please pray that everything we do and say will give God honor; we will learn extensively from this experience but also serve all those we come in contact with. We also ask for your prayers regarding health and safety.
As far as finances, the total cost for this endeavor is approximately $585 per student. This includes the cost of transportation, room, and board for the week. The majority of the money is due on April 12 and the balance is due on May 10.
